SE Georgia Recap: Bradwell gets first win of season by knocking off Tattnall

The schedule was somewhat light across Southeast Georgia Friday night as several area teams had bye weeks and also several games were postponed by weather concerns related to Hurricane Florence.

Those teams having off weeks included Brantley County, Pierce County and Ware County.

Games getting called off were Liberty County-Cross Creek and New Hampstead-Richmond Hill.

In games that were played Friday night, the results were as follows:

Bradwell Institute 42, Tattnall County 8

It was a happy homecoming game for the Tigers who recorded their first win of the season Friday night in Hinesville

The Tigers (1-3) were led by South Carolina commit Kevin Harris who missed last week’s game at Valdosta with an injury. Harris ran for 146 yards and scored twice on runs of 6 and 44 yards.

Bradwell also got a pair of special teams touchdowns including a kick return of 85 yards by Corrie Walker and a 60-yard punt return by Dariuse Cooper.

Also in the win, Alliha Jones returned an interception 50 yards for a Bradwell score while Donte Jones also scored running the ball for the Tigers who play at Long County next week.

Appling County 28, Cook 20

The Pirates evened their season worksheet with a 27-20 triumph over the Hornets from Adel.

Appling (2-2) raced out to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter and held a 14-8 advantage at halftime.

The Pirates extended their lead to 21-8 late in the third period on a 12-yard run by Sharode Roberts.

The Hornets pulled within 21-20 early in the fourth quarter, but missed an extra-point try to tie the game.

Appling would increase its lead to 28-20 with seven minutes left on a 28-yard run by Tyler Jones.

Cook would drive to the Appling 22-yard line late in the game before the Pirates turned the Hornets over on downs with four minutes to go.

The Hornets did get the ball one more time with two minutes remaining, but the Pirates defense created a turnover to put away with the game.

Appling will make the short trip to Jesup next Friday to take on rival and undefeated Wayne County.

Charlton County 37, Atkinson County 12

The Indians opened their Region 2-A ledger with the victory over the Rebels in Folkston.

Charlton led the game 21-6 going into the final period and would outscore Atkinson 16-6 in the final 12 minutes.

Charlton (3-1) played three games in August and then had last week off after losing its third game 21-0 to Appling.

The Indians settled for a 14-6 lead at halftime Friday after driving to the Atkinson 12-yard line late in the second quarter only to see their drive stall deep in Rebel territory.

Charlton would drive deep inside Atkinson territory again early in the third period, and stalled out again.

This time, the Charlton defense would get the Indians the ball back quickly in a short-field situation with an interception that led to a touchdown and a 20-6 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Indians tacked on two more touchdowns and a safety before Atkinson closed out the scoring with a kick return for its second touchdown of the game.

Charlton will play at Turner County next week.

Jenkins County 28, McIntosh County Academy 14

McIntosh is still looking for its first victory in 2018 following a third straight home loss to start the season Friday.

The Buccaneers (0-3) lost to Pierce County in Week 1. Then after an open week, they lost to Brunswick High. And then after their second early bye week, the Bucs fell Friday to the War Eagles after trailing just 8-0 at halftime.

MCA is scheduled to play next week on the road against Calvary Day in Savannah. The game will be the Region 3-A opener for both teams.
