Last week, the Bulloch County Board of Education held its annual organizational meeting and regular session to elect officers and set its schedule of meetings for 2022:
Held in the cafeteria of the school district’s Central Office in Statesboro, Board members re-elected Mike Sparks as chairman and Heather Mims as vice-chairman. Sparks, who has served on the Board since January 1, 2011, was first elected as Board chairman in January 2018. He has been re-elected by his fellow Board members each year since. This year he was nominated by Glenn Womack. There were no other nominations submitted by Board members, so no vote was required for him to assume the role for 2022.
For vice-chairman, Stuart Tedders nominated Heather Mims, and Maurice Hill nominated April Newkirk. The Board voted 5-2 to re-elect Mims as vice-chairman, a majority vote. Board member Glennera Martin was not present for the election of officers, but joined the meeting afterwards. Mims has served on the Board since January 1, 2017. She was first elected as vice-chairman in January 2018, and she has been re-elected by her fellow Board members each year since.
