CHS Spring Football Update

Spring training is drawing to a close for Coach Charles Hammon and his Chattooga Indians. Hammon has seen a lot of growth over the two week spring practice and his staff has identified plenty of areas to improve upon.
After losing 18 seniors, seven starters from the 2017 team signed with college teams during the off-season, Chattooga’s spring practices have still garnered much attention from college recruiters. Rising seniors, T.J. Adams and Dustin Pope, have been on the radar of several scouts and Malachi Mack turned many heads during his sophomore season.

Earlier Thursday, Special Teams Coach, Max Thurmond from Austin Peay, came to check out the golden foot of C.J. Martin. He wasn’t disappointed. Martin demonstrated his kicking and punting skills, booting college-level kickoffs, from the 35-yard line and still maintained 80% touchbacks. Martin went on to show his consistency and range on field goal attempts before closing out with his punting skills, including a 60+ yarder. As always with the recruiting process, coaches like to meet the kids face to face to see if they are a good fit for their program.

All On Georgia caught up with C.J. Martin after his kicking drills, as he rushed to his job at The Willow Tree where he was excited about the opportunity of kicking in college and he felt the interview went good.

On hand at Thursday’s practice was Johnson Richards, Offensive Line Coach for the UNC Charlotte 49ers. Richards was stopping in to visit Mike Adams, who has signed with the 49ers and looks to be joining the team in July. Richards had a few hours to scout Pope and T.J. Adams but, took his time viewing the talent across the board. Mack definitely made an impression, as did rising sophomore Luis Medina.

Richards is excited about his newest recruit and feels that Adams could be an early contributor for the team. With his massive frame, 405 lb bench press and 600 lb squat, Adams has all the tools to be a factor at defensive tackle from his first days on the field. Academically, Adams is no slouch either, carrying a 4.0 GPA including several honors courses and, as a Move On When Ready student, Adams has completed several college courses and will graduate as an honor grad with 12 hours of college credit.
