In his sixth season of NFL play for the Dallas Cowboys, Floyd County’s own Chris Jones became somewhat of a celebrity this week when he delivered a huge hit on a Detroit Lions punt returner in prime time on Monday Night Football.

Jones, a former Coosa High School standout, signed as a rookie free agent with the Cowboys back in 2011, and has been an integral contributor to his team’s impressive run to a NFC East title this season.

On Monday night, with his team up 42-21 midway through the fourth quarter, Jones punted from his own endzone on fourth down and eleven, then leveled Lions wide receiver Andre Roberts on the return at the Cowboy’s 30 yard line out of bounds.

After a solid high school career as a Coosa Eagle, Jones attended Carson-Newman where he was an All-SAC selection in 2008. He is the son of Mike and Teresa Jones, and was an All-Area selection in high school.

Jones is averaging 45.7 yards a punt on 54 punts this season with a long of 63 with Dallas this season.
