Judge Sentences Price to 25 Years, First Five to Serve, in Oak Street Shooting Death

Deoveon LaWayne Price, the Summerville man a Chattooga County jury found not guilty of murder but guilty on two lesser charges in the shooting death of Christopher “D.J.” Chapman, was sentenced Tuesday to a total of 25 years, with the first five years to be served in confinement and the remainder on probation.

Judge Melissa Hise of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Superior Court handed down the sentence following Price’s trial in connection with the June 6, 2025, shooting death of 27-year-old Chapman on Oak Street.

According to the final disposition filed in Chattooga County Superior Court, the jury returned the following verdicts:

• Malice Murder — Not Guilty
• Felony Murder — Not Guilty
• Aggravated Assault — Guilty, sentenced to 20 years
• Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Count 4) — Not Guilty
• Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Count 5) — Guilty, sentenced to 5 years, to run consecutive to the aggravated assault sentence

Combined, the aggravated assault and firearm possession sentences total 25 years, with the first five years to be served in confinement and the remainder on probation, provided Price complies with the conditions of his probation. Price is set to receive credit for time already served in custody dating back to June 6, 2025, the day of his arrest.

Price was represented by attorneys Sutton Connelly and Steven Miller. The case was prosecuted by Lynsay Chapman of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
