Cara Boyd: Trion High School’s Newest Bulldog of ESOL

Trion High School welcomed Cara Boyd as their newest English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher. She will be teaching English to students whose primary language is typically Spanish. Mrs. Boyd is very excited to start teaching on the Hill, saying she has always heard great things about Trion. She is most excited about “being able to teach in a new setting and getting to know everyone here in Trion.” She can’t wait to learn Trion High School’s culture and routines as well as to get to know her students and coworkers.

Mrs. Boyd earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from West Georgia as well as a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Piedmont University. She also received my PreK-12th ESOL endorsement.

Before becoming a Bulldog, Mrs. Boyd taught in Polk County at Northside Elementary and Youngs Grove Elementary, then moved to Unity Christian School in Rome. She has previously taught 1st, 4th, and 5th grade.

Mrs. Boyd didn’t always picture herself as a teacher. Instead, she started college wanting to become a Physical Therapist, then switched to nursing, but after a year decided that it wasn’t the path for her. She realized she wanted to become a teacher after discovering how much she enjoyed helping others understand something they are struggling with, stating, “I love seeing the moment when a student finally understands something and gains confidence in themselves.”

Like teaching, she didn’t know that she had a passion for teaching ESOL until realizing she enjoyed it after her endorsement. When asked why she wants to teach ESOL, “Learning a new language is a scary thing! I enjoy being able to help those students feel comfortable and to know it’s ok to not know something right away. I want to be able to help them gain confidence in themselves as they grow.”

When asked what her favorite topic to teach is, she replied, “I like to allow my students to play games in order for them to practice speaking English. We like to play “20 Questions” and “Hot Seat”. This gives them a chance to have fun and relax while also practicing their speaking and communication skills.”

While teaching ESOL, Mrs. Boyd’s goal as a teacher is to help her students build confidence in their English-speaking abilities, improve their communication skills, and help them feel more comfortable using English every day. She wants her students to know that she hopes they can feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and trying new things! Mrs. Boyd stated that she wants her students to know that “I believe in them and want them to succeed!”

Outside of school, Mrs. Boyd enjoys hanging out with her family, decorating her house, and visiting antique stores. She enjoys watching true crime documentaries and listening to Morgan Wallen.

Additionally, you will often find her at a Trion football game this Fall and Trion baseball games this Spring, as she is married to Coach Boyd, who also teaches Physical Education this school year.
