Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Announces Seizure of 23 Dogs, Firearms, and Narcotics in Crawford County

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J Harper announced the arrest of Robert James Hester following a joint investigation by the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division (GDA-LE), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, and Peach County SWAT into alleged illegal dog fighting activities. The investigation resulted in the execution of state and federal search warrants on June 24, 2026, leading to the seizure of 23 dogs believed to have been used for fighting, as well as the confiscation of multiple firearms, suspected marijuana, and suspected methamphetamine.

“The Georgia Department of Agriculture has zero tolerance for illegal dog fighting and the cruelty it inflicts on animals. This investigation not only led to the rescue of 23 dogs believed to have been used for fighting, but also uncovered multiple firearms, and suspected narcotics,” said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J Harper. “We remain committed to working alongside our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to investigate these crimes, protect animal welfare, and hold those who violate the law accountable. I want to thank each of our law enforcement partners for their coordinated efforts and unwavering commitment to protecting Georgians.”

Hester has been charged with possession of firearms by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, and possession of methamphetamine. In addition to the state charges, Hester faces federal charges related to alleged illegal dog fighting and firearms violations. He remains in the Crawford County Jail without bond.
