Residents who travel Oak Hill Road west of Lyerly will soon need to plan for a detour as Chattooga County prepares to close the roadway at the Mosteller Creek bridge beginning June 16.
According to a notice released Tuesday by Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Andy Allen, the closure comes after a recent inspection by the Georgia Department of Transportation identified structural concerns with the bridge that require immediate attention.
The bridge, identified as Bridge No. 055-0025-0, carries Oak Hill Road over Mosteller Creek west of Lyerly. County officials were notified of the upcoming closure by GDOT bridge inspector Tim Edwards on June 2.
“The closure is necessary following the state inspection and the identification of structural concerns that require immediate attention,” Allen said in the notice.
The bridge serves as an important route for residents traveling from the Menlo area and neighboring Alabama communities. County officials noted that the roadway is used daily by local workers and members of the agricultural community and is located just a short distance from Lyerly Elementary School.
While the bridge remains closed, motorists should expect detours and additional travel time. A detour route has been established utilizing Smallen Road and Dovers Cut Road around the closure area.
At this time, no timeline has been announced for reopening the bridge. County officials said Chattooga County and GDOT engineers are working together to evaluate the structure and determine the most cost-effective and efficient option for repair or replacement.
“The county and state engineers are working together to evaluate the bridge and identify the best, most cost-effective, and quickest replacement or repair options,” the notice states.
County leaders said they will continue providing updates through county communication channels as additional information becomes available.
“We will keep citizens informed with regular updates through the county website, social media channels, and local notices as more information becomes available,” Allen said.
