Sole Commissioner Andy Allen Sets Water Rate Increases

Chattooga County residents will soon notice changes to their water bills after Sole Commissioner Andy Allen approved a plan to increase rates over the next five years.

Chattooga County residents will soon notice changes to their water bills after Sole Commissioner Andy Allen approved a plan to increase rates over the next five years.

The newly adopted resolution calls for a 3% annual rate increase as the county works to keep pace with rising operational costs, including materials, equipment, and ongoing system maintenance. The adjustment is intended to support the long-term reliability and financial stability of the county’s water system.

In addition to the rate increases, the county is restructuring how usage is billed. The base usage threshold will be reduced from 2,000 gallons to 1,000 gallons, which could change how monthly charges appear for some customers.

Tap fees for new service connections are also increasing under the updated schedule:
$1,300 for a ¾-inch meter
$2,200 for a 1-inch meter
$4,000 for a 2-inch meter
Larger meters will be priced on a case-by-case basis. Fire hydrant installation or replacement is set at $4,500, while the existing $50 meter deposit will remain unchanged.

The plan also introduces a new Water Leak Insurance Program aimed at helping customers avoid costly surprises from unexpected leaks. The program will add $2 to monthly water bills and includes coverage for one leak-related adjustment per calendar year. Enrollment will be automatic, though customers may opt out in writing.

Unlike some similar programs, this plan is structured to cover the full cost of a qualifying leak rather than placing a cap on assistance.

All changes are effective immediately, with customers expected to see the impact reflected in upcoming billing cycles.
