Chattooga County has a new leader in animal welfare, and she’s already making big changes. Commissioner Andy Allen has officially appointed 22-year-old Emily Wright as the county’s Director of Animal Control, marking an important step forward for the department’s operations and community outreach.
A 2021 graduate of Chattooga High School, Wright began her work with Animal Control as a volunteer, gradually taking on more responsibilities and developing a passion for the work. Her dedication, leadership skills, and hands-on experience ultimately led to her appointment.
“I love my job,” Wright said, reflecting on her journey. “My goals for the future are to continue increasing the number of adoptions and to do everything possible to set our dogs up for success outside of the shelter.”
First Big Move: Adoption Fees Waived Until September 1
As part of her new leadership, Wright has announced that adoption fees will be waived through September 1, 2025, in an effort to find homes for the many animals currently in the shelter.
“We are extremely full,” Wright said. “We have several sweet kittens and cats that are already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. We also have plenty of cute puppies and adult dogs that are vaccinated, microchipped, and have spay/neuter appointments set up. Of course, we will be screening potential adopters carefully. NOW is the time to adopt! Please come meet our long-term residents who have been waiting far too long for their forever homes. While they receive the best care we can offer, shelter life is not ideal for extended stays and can impact an animal’s mental and emotional health.”
