Georgia State Parks Expand Outdoor Accessibility with New GRIT Freedom Chairs

• F.D. Roosevelt State Park, Pine Mountain – Carl’s Cove Trail
• Fort McAllister State Park, Richmond Hill – Magnolia, Red Bird Creek and Fort trails
• James H. Floyd State Park, Summerville – Lower Lake Trail
• Mistletoe State Park, Appling – Canyon Loop Trail

GRIT Freedom Chair reservations are required and can be submitted through GaStateParks.org/Accessibility. Each rider must be accompanied by an adult in good physical condition who can assist and navigate the park terrain. Helmets are provided.

“The addition of GRIT Freedom Chairs is another step in making Georgia’s outdoor spaces more inclusive for everyone,” said Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites Director Angie Johnson. “These specialized chairs empower more people to experience our parks in a new way.”

In addition to the GRIT Freedom Chairs, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Aimee Copeland Foundation provide free, all-terrain Action Trackchairs at 19 state parks, historic sites and a wildlife center. Action Trackchairs give visitors who otherwise might not be able to navigate more difficult types of terrain the ability to hit the trails. Qualifying park visitors can experience a sense of freedom that can be difficult to have in an everyday wheelchair. The chairs can be used for hiking, fishing, and other recreational activities.

Additional accessibility features at select Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites include ADA cabins and campsites, accessible trails, adaptive kayak launches, a horseback riding ramp, and EnChroma® colorblind glasses.
