Coach Tad Allen is retiring after 32 years of coaching recreation sports in Chattooga County, marking the end of an era at the Summerville Recreation Center. Allen, known for his unwavering commitment, coached three sports a season — football, basketball, and baseball — every year. Remarkably, he started coaching before he even had children of his own, driven by a genuine love for sports and a desire to invest in the lives of local youth. He spent countless hours on the field or court over the last 32 years, pouring into developing young athletes, instilling both skill and character.
Over the years, Allen led several teams, including the Menlo Tigers, Summerville Indians, Summerville Chiefs, Summerville Hawks, and Lyerly Lions. He found success in each program he touched.
In 2008, he coached the Summerville Indians to a thrilling 26-20 overtime win over Trion in the North Georgia Football League Mite Championship. His 8U Summerville Indians football team went undefeated in the Calhoun League in 2020. His football teams won several Super Bowls over his career.
On the baseball field, his 11- and 12-year-old Summerville Indians advanced to the state tournament in 2012.
Allen’s teams brought home multiple Santa in Uniform Tournament titles in basketball, showcasing their consistent success on the court. In 2021, he led the Summerville 8U basketball team to a state championship — a standout moment in his career and the first state title for a Summerville basketball team since 1992. That season remains one of his proudest coaching achievements.
Coach Tad Allen’s contributions stretch far beyond the scoreboard. His dedication shaped the lives of hundreds of local youth, teaching lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. After over three decades, countless games, and immeasurable community impact, Coach Allen’s legacy is firmly cemented in Chattooga County youth sports.
