Eighty-Eight Scholarship Recipients Awarded at Ogeechee Tech Foundation Annual Banquet

The Ogeechee Technical College Foundation recently held its annual scholarship dinner in the Oak Room of the Jack Hill Building at the College. The 88 awards recognized at the banquet are the most since the college was founded in 1986 and makes this the 2nd consecutive record-breaking year.

“We have grateful hearts for all that our donors do for our College. It is truly their kindness, generosity, and contributions that make a difference in the lives of our students,” said Michelle Davis, Vice President for College Advancement.

During the evening, remarks were given by several scholarship recipients including Gavin Smithey, recipient of the MOHR Whitlock Endowed Scholarship, Taylor Rhymes-Weidner, recipient of the Best Friends Veterinary Technology Scholarship, and Khamari Lattimore, recipient of the Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory Endowed Scholarship.

Rhymes-Weidner, whose dream of being a veterinarian was established at a young age, is currently enrolled in OTC’s Veterinary Technology program, and has learned that her future career is more than just caring for cute animals. “I’ve learned in my profession that it’s not always about cuddling puppies and playing with kittens. Sometimes I have to be there during peoples most vulnerable moments,” said Rhymes Weidner. “That’s why a personal, nurturing education was crucial for me. Ogeechee Tech has provided just that. My professors and staff have nurtured my skills, my professionalism, and my confidence.”

Among the 88 awards given out this year there were twelve new scholarships made available to students:

• Arthur Howard Construction Annual Scholarship
• Bill & Ruthie Crider Service Leadership Annual Scholarship
• Charles Gary Tippins, Sr. Endowed Scholarship
• Ellis E. Williams VFW Post 7116 Scholarship
• Franklin Automotive Technology Annual Scholarship
• Glennville Rotary Club Annual Scholarship
• Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory Endowed Scholarship
• Mohr Whitlock Endowed Scholarship
• The Ball Family Endowed Fish & Wildlife Management Scholarship
• The Honorable Jan B. Tankersley Endowed Nursing Scholarship
• Tommy David Family Endowed Scholarship
• Travel Centers of America Annual Scholarship

Scholarship applications are accepted prior to the start of each semester and are reviewed by Ogeechee Tech board members and community volunteers, along with faculty and staff. Through the funding of endowments and annual iGot donations, scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees, and books.
