Ogeechee Technical College Awarded Sixty STOP THE BLEED Kits

Ogeechee Technical College recently received sixty STOP THE BLEED® kits through a grant awarded by the Georgia Trauma Commission.

“We are grateful to the Georgia Trauma Commission for providing these valuable kits that can potentially save lives in emergency response situations,” said Laura Coleman, a Paramedicine Technology instructor. “Every building across our three locations will have at least two kits, one will be with every AED and additional kits will be stored in specialized classrooms with a higher potential risk for injuries.”

The national STOP THE BLEED® initiative empowers individuals with training and access to bleeding control kits. According to the CDC, uncontrolled post-trauma bleeding is the leading cause of potentially preventable death among trauma patients.

Training for proper use of the bleeding control kits last approximately 60 minutes and a portion of the training can even be done online, with the skills portion in person.

“The hope is that we can connect faculty, staff, and students to the training so that, in the event an emergency ever should occur, we have several personnel on campus capable of administering emergency aid to someone with uncontrolled post-trauma bleeding,” said Coleman.

The control kits contain gloves, compressed gauze, trauma dressing, shears, a pad, tape, and a tourniquet.
