Ogeechee Technical College is the 2021 Fix Your Content Day Challenge global champion.

Every year, the global accessibility community sets aside the third Thursday of May for Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The purpose is to bring attention to the need for more inclusive digital content. This is the 2nd year that Blackboard Ally has hosted the Fix Your Content Day Challenge, a 24-hour competition committed to creating accessible and more inclusive digital learning content across institutions.

“This contest was an excellent opportunity for our faculty and staff to focus on making our online content more accessible for all students,” said Jennifer Witherington, Senior Academic Dean. “I’m thankful to everyone who participated for dedicating their time and attention to accessibility for Fix Your Content Day and for showing our commitment as a College to providing quality online education.”

Over the course of 24-hours, OTC faculty and staff corrected 5,480 online content items, resulting in 3.53 fixes per student which was enough to finish first in the North American region and highest among all 115 colleges and universities that participated across four different continents.

In 2019, the College set the goal to reach an accessibility rate of 90% or higher in all of their blackboard content, a goal which they met that year and have maintained.

“With the influx of online content to blackboard during the pandemic it became harder and harder to maintain that 90% goal. This is the first time we have participated in this contest and it was a really great opportunity to make sure all of that content met accessibility standards,” said Witherington. “Right now, our accessibility score is at 92.5% — the highest it has ever been.”
