Camden’s Watson named first Southeast Georgia football player of week

AllOnGeorgia is pleased to announce the first Southeast Georgia High School Football Player of the Week.

The first honoree is Camden County quarterback Logan Watson who helped

Camden County High

steer the Wildcats to a 27-20 victory last Friday in their season opener against West Forsyth at Chris Gilman Stadium in Kingsland.

Making his debut as Camden’s quarterback, the junior threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns to lead a Wildcats offense that finished with 282 total yards for the game.

“He managed the offense very efficiently,” said Camden coach Bob Sphire. “He showed a lot of composure in leading the team at critical points of the contest. He played his best at the most important moments of the game.”

Watson took the Wildcats to the end zone on their opening drive as he tossed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Shaw Hardy less than four minutes into the game.

He directed three other scoring drives in the game with the last two coming after West Forsyth had tied the score.

Watson completed his second scoring pass from 11 yards late in the second quarter to give Camden a 20-13 lead at halftime.

Then, after seeing the Wolverines tie the score at 20-20 with just over eight minutes to go in the game, Watson engineered a game-winning drive for the Wildcats which he finished off with a 17-yard TD strike to Detravious Campbell that stood as the decisive score.

Watson was involved in a competition with several players for the starting job in spring practice. Camden didn’t name him the starter until early July.

“Logan has worked really hard in the offseason and during the preseason to prepare,” Sphire said. “He is constantly working on his own to perfect his skills and has really worked hard to understand the read progressions in our passing game. His hard work paid off last Friday night.”

The player of the week honor will be given out each Tuesday of the 2018 prep football season.
