Burke County Inmate Escapes

Authorities say an inmate  escaped from the Burke County Medical Center after being transported from the Burke County Jail. The inmate has since been recaptured.

The Augusta Chronicle reported that the inmate, who is behind bars for suspicion of burglary, was taken to the the hospital around 5:30 p.m.. on Sunday afternoon. The hospital notified the Waynesboro police to let them know that the inmate was no longer in the temporary holding cell.

Burke and Richmond county deputies joined Waynesboro officers in the search and found the inmate on Jones Avenue in Burke County around 8 p.m. Jones Avenue is only about a mile from the hospital.

The inmate was rearrested and taken back to Burke County jail without incident.
