Tropical Cyclone Report for 2017’s Hurricane Irma Released

Hurricane Irma report released showcasing how Irma caused widespread devastation across the affected areas and was one of the strongest and costliest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin.

Whether you evacuated Glynn County on September 10th and 11th, 2017 or hunkered down, Hurricane Irma had lasting impacts on our community, our economy and our lives. According to the NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center, they have issued the Tropical Cyclone Report for 2017’s Hurricane Irma.  This 111 page detailed report is an eye opener of just how expansive and powerful this storm truly became and the devastation it left behind.

As stated on their Facebook page, Irma was a long-lived Cape Verde hurricane that reached category 5 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The catastrophic hurricane made seven landfalls, four of which occurred as a category 5 hurricane across the northern Caribbean Islands.

It made landfall as a category 4 hurricane in the Florida Keys and struck southwestern Florida at category 3 intensity.

The comprehensive report showcases how Irma caused widespread devastation across the affected areas.  It not only gives a synoptic history, but also meteorological statistics covering winds and pressure, storm surge, rainfall, flooding and tornadoes that affected each area as the storm passed.  Damages from wind and water in the United States alone total approximately 50 billion dollars, making it one of the costliest and strongest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin.
