The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called in to assist with an officer-involved shooting investigation in Whitfield County, GA.
The shooting occurred on I-75 southbound in Dalton on Wednesday near the Walnut Avenue exit.
Preliminary reports suggest that Parrish Smaey, 56, of Jonesboro, GA, and a female subject were shoplifting in Bradley County, TN when store employees were threatened with a handgun.
Hamilton County, TN officials placed a lookout for Smaey and the female subject.
A car chase occurred with Hamilton County, Catoosa County, Georgia State Patrol (GSP), and Whitfield County authorities where Smaey, the driver, was stopped by a PIT maneuver by GSP. Smaey exited the car and surrendered. The female subject then took control of the car and fled from police.
Whitfield County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a similar maneuver to contain the vehicle with the female subject where she exited the vehicle with two handguns and pointed it at officers. Multiple officers from both Tennesee and Georgia fired at the female, striking her, where she remains in serious condition in a hospital in Chattanooga, TN. No officers were hurt in this shooting.
Smaey was treated for minor injuries and released from the same hospital and booked into the Whitfield County jail on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted offender and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Additional charges are expected for both Smaey and the female subject.
At this time, investigators are working to identify the female subject.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Whitfield County District Attorney’s Office for review.
