Georgia monument of Revolutionary War hero defaced with googly eyes

Georgia monument of war hero has been googly-eyed.

A historical Savannah monument has been googly-eyed.

The monument of Nathaniel Greene, an American Revolutionary War hero, was found defaced on Thursday. Savannah City Officials want to catch the person(s) who defaced and vandalized the monument.

According to local Savannah news outlets, if the person(s) is found that defaced the monument, they could face criminal trespassing charges and possibly more related charges.

Nathaniel Greene died in Georgia in 1786, and he was a major general under George Washington in the Continental Army. Greene was a self-trained soldier who formed a local militia in Boston and eventually came to command the southern theater. Due to his leadership and strategic efforts to the Continental Army, Greene was awarded a large amount of property that had a plantation within Chatham County. Greene died unexpectedly in 1786 and was buried in Johnson Square – the monument was erected in his honor.  Greene’s son is also buried on the site of the monument.

If the damage to Greene’s statue is found to be more than $500, the person(s) responsible for the defacement could receive felony charges.
