On March 1, a Canine Handler/Trainer with the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC), Jamey Jordan, was named the Beyond the Call award recipient for his selfless service and passion for the job. Beyond the Call is an award given to employees that go above and beyond the call of duty. Jordan was awarded a plaque at the March GDC board meeting by the Board of Corrections Commissioner.
“Jordan has been a Canine Handler for more than a decade and he trains all of the new hires in our Canine Unit,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “His passion for the job and love for the dogs is evident in how well he and his dogs work together to complete the missions assigned.”
In 1988, Jordan began his career with GDC at the West Georgia Boot Camp. He was then promoted to Sergeant during his seven years there. In December of 2004, Jordan applied for the position of Canine Handler and was promoted on January 1, 2005. He was then assigned to the kennel at Coweta where he spent the next few years proving himself to be an asset to the Department.
In January of 2017, he accepted the position of Canine Handler/Trainer. Jordan was instrumental in the overall training of six of the current 24 narcotics detection canines and the training of six new Canine Handlers who learned tracking as well as narcotic, cellphone and bomb detection. He currently manages 12 canine kennels across Georgia with two handlers at each. Jordan is also certified by the National Police Canine Association.
“There is nothing like getting your first catch with a tracking dog,” said Jordan. “That is just a feeling that only other Canine Handlers will understand when you catch a bad guy in the woods with your dog or you find their contraband in the prison with that dog you have been training. It is the best feeling in the world. It is the most rewarding job I have ever had,” said Jordan.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
