Several weeks ago, the Viking Nation learned of the resignation of Defensive Coordinator David Shores.  Questions were immediately raised of the direction of the Lowndes defense.  Those questions will soon be answered.

According to a press release from Lowndes County Schools, Athletic Director and Head Coach Randy McPherson has found his coach.  The new Defensive Coordinator is Byron Slack, current DC at Camden County High School.

The press release states that Coach Slack comes to Lowndes from Camden County High School where he has worked and coached since 2005. For the past five (5) years he has served as defensive coordinator for Camden.

Coach Slack is a Georgia native having graduated from Terrell County High School in Dawson, GA in 1987. After high school graduation he proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1987-91.

Upon discharge from the Navy he attended the University of West Georgia where he played tight end and graduated in 1997.  As a player Coach Slack was an All-Conference tight end in 1995 and first team All-American in 1996. He was West Georgia’s first Division II All-American. In 2003 he was inducted into the West Georgia Hall of Fame.

He began his coaching career in 1997 at Dunwoody High School where he served as a defensive assistant. In 1998 Coach Slack served a graduate assistant for the University of Auburn where he earned his master of education (MEd) degree. As a graduate assistant he worked as the strength and conditioning coordinator. He has since furthered his education by earning a doctorate from NOVA Southeastern University in 2014.

In 1999 Coach Slack returned to his alma mater where he served as the University of West Georgia defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. From 2003-04 he worked for Minnesota State University as their defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.

In 2005 Coach Slack returned to Georgia settling in Camden County and working at Camden County High School first as an offensive line coach from 2005-07 and then defensive line coach from 2008-12. In 2012 he was promoted to defensive coordinator – a position he held until his move to Lowndes High.

Coach Slack is known for his extensive strength and conditioning program not only with athletes but also with faculty and staff. We welcome him to the One Lowndes family and look forward to his enthusiasm and zeal for both students and co-workers. He will begin his duties at Lowndes High on March 15.

His wife is Mary Francis and they have one son – Zion age 16.
