Last week, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) hosted the three-day Team Dual State Championships at the Macon Centreplex. Saturday, Camden County High School (CCHS) proved, in dominant fashion, to be the undisputed state champions for their third straight state title under Head Coach Jess Wilder. Camden dominated four-time consecutive 6A state champions, Archer High School of Gwinnett County, 50-15 in the state title match.

In previous seasons, CCHS won two straight 5A Dual titles. This season was a special one for the Camden High wrestling team since this was their first time competing in Class 7A. CCHS dominated the entire competition and won the title convincingly. CCHS defeated top seeded and reigning four-time state champions in the GHSA’s highest classification, Archer High School. Archer was nationally ranked at the start of the season but fell out of the polls. Archer did have one nationally ranked team member, Quinn Miller, in weight class 220.

According to Head Coach Jess Wilder, Camden’s national ranking has been as high as 27.  With an experienced senior class (8 seniors), with one All-American national wrestler in Denton Spencer (weight class 145), Camden was seeded second in the state tournament. Just as impressive as their national team credentials, Camden’s journey to the state championship match dominated Rockdale County 69 -12, Brookwood 56-18, and Mountain View 57-8.

Coach Wilder said the key to success is the “time the kids put in and their work ethic” along with starting wrestling early. Another key principle Coach Wilder continues to implement is scheduling. “You have to balance the schedule as not to overtrain,” said Wilder. “At the state level, you have to be smart at scheduling…balance the schedule to get downtime” as this allows time for them “to be teenagers.”

The wrestling season is not over. The team will be competing in individual competitions in both the sectional and state competition.  Sectional competition will be at Lowndes County High School on Feb. 4th-5th. The State Traditionals, which is the individual state competition, will be in Macon on Feb 9th-11th (see state individual tournament schedule).
