This Op-Ed column was written by Lisa Ring, Democratic Candidate for Congress for Georgia’s First Congressional District. The First District makes up the coastal Georgia counties and the areas containing the cities of Alma, Blackshear, Folkston, Hinesville, Homerville, Jesup, and Waycross. These are the views of the author and not those of AllOnGeorgia.

Hello, I’m Lisa Ring and I’m the Democratic candidate for Congress in Georgia’s 1st District. I am the mother of four amazing children, a military spouse, and a military mom. I’m a former corrections officer and a former director of an anti-recidivism program. I’ve been an activist for over 30 years, advocating for the rights of all people. Now I want to fight for you as your representative in Washington, D.C.

For the past 18 months, I have been speaking with residents in all 17 counties of Georgia’s 1st Congressional District. I’ve really enjoyed these conversations and discussing the issues that matter, and I’ve been grateful to see that what we have in common is so much greater than what divides us. When I decided to run for Congress, I wanted to do things differently. Some politicians focus on the labels and not the actual people we plan to represent. But I chose to not only focus on Democrats – our campaign has also reached out to Republicans, Independents, Libertarians, Green Party members, etc. And we wanted to reach those residents who may have given up on the political process altogether, so we knocked on their doors as well. To date, our campaign, with the help of many volunteers, has knocked on over 40,000 doors. We have also called over 15,000 residents in GA-01. Rural Georgia is very important to our economy and often is overlooked. As your next Congresswoman, I will give every area of this district the representation it deserves.

My opponent and I disagree on many of the issues. We also have a different vision of how to represent the people of GA-01. I want to open the door, as I have, to my constituents of all political views to have discussions. We may not always agree, but I want everyone to have a voice. When people are elected to office, they often forget what their role is, and their responsibility to the people they’ve been called to serve. When I am elected, I assure you, the Congresswoman representing you will be the same as the candidate who knocked on your door – someone who listens and brings your voice, your issues, your concerns, to Washington.

The vision I have for Georgia’s 1st District has not changed. If healthcare, higher wages, workers’ rights, serving our veterans, protecting our environment, improving our infrastructure, and a better public education system is what you seek, I ask for your vote on November 6th.  You can learn more about my platform and how I plan to represent you by visiting: lisaringforcongress.com.
