GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Floyd County

No officers were injured in this incident.

On Thursday, May 23, 2019, the GBI was requested by the Floyd County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting on Kingston Highway, Rome, Floyd County, GA.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 6:20 AM, the Metro Drug Task Force and SWAT team were executing a warrant for drugs & weapons at 1933 Kingston Highway.  The subject, identified as Michael Lee Spears, age 44, had the residence barricaded.  Once officers made entry, Spears fired upon officers.  Officers returned fire, striking Spears.  Members of the SWAT team were able to render first aid until EMS arrived.  Spears was transported to Floyd Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries.

No officers were injured in this incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Once complete, it will be provided to the Floyd County District Attorney’s Office for review.
