Jake Wells, a sophomore at Middle Tennessee State University and a 2017 Trion High School graduate, competed in the NCWA (National Collegiate Wrestling Association) Nationals Championship in Allen, Texas which was held March 14-16. In order to qualify for nationals, the athletes must place in the top five at the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship which was held on March 2 in Lynchburg, Virginia, and Jake placed in the top five in the 184 weight class. The nationals tournament included about 500 wrestlers representing 78 teams from across the country. Jake came out strong Thursday with three wins, two of which were pins, which qualified him for the quarter finals on Friday. He ended the tournament with a record of 3-2.
Jake has wrestled since he was about six years old and lettered all four years in high school. He is a concrete industry management major at MTSU and will be doing an internship in St. Louis this summer. He is the son of Chad Wells and Wendy McWhorter.
